I like stories that assume one of the characters is an addict and then just go from there. See what happens next. I am tired of testimonials and I don’t like preaching. Too often stories about addiction all seem to blur into one or two different types of stories. There will always be a place for the redemptive narrative arc. And we can’t completely discount the confessional. But we should strive for more. We should try to show what is human about struggling with these types of disorders.

Writers disproportionately know, love, or become addicts, so of course we create stories about our experiences. Please send me stories about addiction or the effects of addiction in your life. Addiction to sex, drugs, or alcohol is fine. But don’t neglect addictions to people, places, or things. Memoir expressed through visual media–photography, comics, film, performance–also excites me. But whether it’s narrative or not, if it’s memoir and it concerns addiction, I’d love to see it.
